I think its one of the key things that get people hired for these companies - I backpacked around South America and kept bumping into the same overland tour in Bolivia - they were staying the same cheap hotels I was. They were a bunch of bloody wimps - wouldn't go out by themselves - didn't know how to order a beer in Spanish even! The leader was a really nice guy - who basically had to spend 2 days re-building a gear box in the courtyard of the hotel - he spoke fluent Spanish and appeared to be an excellent mechanic. <br/>It was that group which made me decide NOT to become an overland guide a) I am inept with mechanical anything - and b) I so couldn't be bothered with shepharding the paying customers they were like "where can I buy a poncho" - in La Paz - open your eyes love everywhere!
